As regular followers of our social media will know, we had a couple of incidents towards the end of last year with customers needing emergency medical help. This is luckily still a very rare occurrence, but when it happens it can be very scary for everyone concerned. On both occasions we’ve had to dash down to the nearby Swettenham Club, who have very kindly helped us out by lending us their defibrillator. As you can imagine, though, having to travel even that short distance when someone is ill is stressful, so we’ve decided it’s time for us to have our own unit.
A defibrillator is a device that gives a high energy electric shock to the heart of someone who is in cardiac arrest. This high energy shock is called defibrillation, and according to the British Heart Foundation it’s an essential part of trying to save the life of someone who’s in cardiac arrest. They’re straightforward to use, even by untrained operators, and can also be used under the telephone supervision of emergency services. While we obviously hope we’re not going to have any more incidents, at least we know that if the situation does arise we’re now equipped to deal with it as quickly and efficiently as possible. Our defibrillator is an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator), a lightweight, battery-operated, portable device that checks the heart’s rhythm and sends a shock to the heart to restore a normal rhythm. The device is used to help people with sudden cardiac arrest, and can dramatically increase their chances of recovery.
Happily both our customers recovered, and we’re happy too knowing that we’re as prepared as we can be! To find out more about the Swettenham Arms including downloading our menu, visit the rest of our website.
