Those of you who come regularly to the Swettenham Arms will know we’re dog friendly. Did you know, though, that we welcome other four-legged guests as well?
New this year, we’re set up to welcome horse riders properly. In a quiet and shady corner of our car park, we now have a sturdy hitching rail with tie up rings for four horses. (We’ve also got strategically placed buckets handy, and we’d be grateful if you’d clear up after your horse!) Water is available on request. At quiet times, we’re happy for you to park horse boxes or trailers here, but please do ring first to check we’re not going to be busy.
If you’d like to incorporate a lunch stop into your ride, there are several routes available. You can start at Brereton Country Park (horse box parking is available in the car park there, charges apply), ride through the park then cross over the main road into Davenport Lane (visibility is good both ways but do take care crossing). Ride along the lane, which turns into a bridlepath and back into a lane. You’ll eventually come out at the Swettenham Arms. Alternatively, you could park at Somerford Park Farm, have a gallop round their six mile farm ride then ride through Brereton and on to us for lunch (please don’t park at Somerford unless you’re using their facilities).
After lunch, you can continue for a hack through the quiet lanes of Swettenham. Turn left out of the pub and first left again, and after thirty yards you’ll see a path heading steeply down on the right hand side. You can have a short canter up the hill on the other side of the valley, but watch out for pedestrians! At the top, you can turn right and make your way back via the road (approx 40 minutes back to the pub, turn right at the end then right again into the ford road), or left for a longer ride.
If you’re having lunch or a drink at the pub, we’d appreciate it if you stayed close to your horse in case of any issues – we have two lovely seating areas very close to the hitching rail. We look forward to seeing you soon!
