Father’s Day was first held in America in 1910 to celebrate paternal bonds and the role of fathers in society, and it’s now celebrated all over the world, usually in June. In the UK, Father’s Day this year is Sunday June 15th so now’s the time to plan the perfect day for your father.
The Father’s Day present
Homemade gifts are the most appreciated, and these delicious ginger biscuits are easy to make. Present them in a clear glass jar, complete with a ribbon and gift tag.
To make around 12 biscuits, you’ll need:
- 70g butter, softened
- 100g Demerara sugar
- 2 tbsp treacle
- 250g plain flour
- ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- yolk of one freerange egg
What to do:
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius, and grease a large baking tray.
Beat the butter and sugar together, then add the treacle. (Tip – put the treacle in a small heatproof bowl and heat it in the microwave for 20 seconds, then tip it into the bowl.)
Add the ginger, flour, bicarbonate and egg yolk, and mix.
- Add sufficient milk to form a stiff dough.
- Turn out onto a lightly floured surface, and roll out to 1/2 cm thick.
Cut out into shapes (hearts, stars or circles) with biscuit cutters, and transfer to the baking tray.
- Bake for 12 to 13 minutes, then transfer to a baking tray until completely cold. Pack and label.
On the day
Kick start your day with breakfast at the Swettenham Arms – we do a great bacon or sausage barm between 10am and 12pm. Then, head off for a long walk through the surrounding countryside – visit the Lovell Quinta Arboretum right next door to the pub, or head further afield to Brereton Country Park or along the Dane Valley. We’d love to have you and your family join us for lunch or dinner, as well! For more information about our Father’s Day specials, give us a call on 01477 571284.
