Sing a song of spring

Hands up who’s getting a bit fed up with this weather? If it’s not raining, it’s freezing. If it’s not freezing, it’s windy. If it’s not windy, it’s snowing. Sometimes this winter, it seems like we’ve had everything all at once. Well, the good news is that although we’ve still got some way to go, spring is starting to put out a few feelers.

The bulbs are starting to sprout in the Arboretum behind the pub, and some of the trees are thinking about budding. If you’ve been out for a walk around Swettenham recently, you may have started to notice more activity amongst the birds, as well. At this time of year, searching for food is still their number one priority, so do keep putting out seed and fat balls in your garden. It won’t be too long, though, before you start to hear the sound of birdsong, which heralds the start of spring. Birds tend to sing more in the early hours of the morning (the ‘dawn chorus’), as their song carries far and wide in the quiet air, but you can normally hear songs throughout most of the day.

Birds you may hear in the Arboretum include thrushes, blackbirds and starlings, who all have distinctive songs.

The good news is that a new study has revealed that birdsong can boost your mood and sense of well being for several hours at a time. Researchers at King’s College London asked participants to use an app to record their mood as they moved around cities, and found that moods were significantly better during periods of exposure to nature. The effect lasted more than four hours. There were over 100 participants, and they completed a total of 3,013 assessments over seven days while their exact location was logged via GPS.

So next time you have a couple of hours to spare, brave the elements. Come for a walk round the Arboretum or along the footpaths surrounding the pub, and benefit from your own ‘nature break’. Remember to come and see us afterwards for coffee or lunch – muddy boots and dogs are warmly welcome in our bar area, and we’ve got real log fires too. We look forward to seeing you.
