Our Ghost

Given the nature of the history of our Inn, it may not be too surprising for customers to hear then that have been a number of ghost sightings in the area, including one at the inn itself!

On 15th November 2005 a customer was enjoying a meal in the dining room. During the meal, a ghostly apparition appeared at the fireplace

The ghost appeared to be the figure of a nun dressed in black. She spoke to the customer and said “My name is Sarah”. She revealed that she was 35 years old and seemed very sad in her demeanour. She was floating on stairs. The customer was quite agitated about the experience and left the pub very quickly, leaving her husband wondering what had happened to cause the upset.

The customer subsequently went to see the local vicar of St. Peters Church (opposite); Chris Kemp who confirmed the ghost had been seen on previous occasions.

Since then, we have been informed that in 1952 the rectory was exorcized by the local vicar to release troubled spirits. In January 2006, The Congleton Paranormal Society conducted a vigil at the pub during the night. The findings of which were published in the local press. More vigils are planned. Paranormal magazine ‘Ghost Voices’ also produced an article on the Swettenham Arms in May 2009.

  • “The surroundings of the pub, including the lavender field and the adjacent arboretum, are stunning all year round. The staff are friendly. The drinks are excellent and the ale is varied and well kept. The food is consistently excellent. I truly can’t recommend it highly enough. “

  • Called in today and the place is a typical English pub. Beams horse, brasses and a lovely atmosphere. Great place for a pub lunch so try it if you are in the area.

We had a lovely evening, enjoyed everything. Bonus of half price food too, ends at the end of November but hurray, back on for January and February 2020.

  • We stumbled upon this beautiful pub whilst out and about on a bike ride. We’re glad we did because it was a very welcoming place. We found a cosy corner table and enjoyed an evening meal here. Good ales on too. Service friendly and very efficient. Couldn’t fault our experience here. Would definitely revisit if in the area again and would recommend without hesitation.

  • What a delightful pub/restaurant. The menu was extensive and the food was absolutely delicious. It is a bit remote, but well worth the trouble getting there.
