Our Ghost

Given the nature of the history of our Inn, it may not be too surprising for customers to hear then that have been a number of ghost sightings in the area, including one at the inn itself!

On 15th November 2005 a customer was enjoying a meal in the dining room. During the meal, a ghostly apparition appeared at the fireplace

The ghost appeared to be the figure of a nun dressed in black. She spoke to the customer and said “My name is Sarah”. She revealed that she was 35 years old and seemed very sad in her demeanour. She was floating on stairs. The customer was quite agitated about the experience and left the pub very quickly, leaving her husband wondering what had happened to cause the upset.

The customer subsequently went to see the local vicar of St. Peters Church (opposite); Chris Kemp who confirmed the ghost had been seen on previous occasions.

Since then, we have been informed that in 1952 the rectory was exorcized by the local vicar to release troubled spirits. In January 2006, The Congleton Paranormal Society conducted a vigil at the pub during the night. The findings of which were published in the local press. More vigils are planned. Paranormal magazine ‘Ghost Voices’ also produced an article on the Swettenham Arms in May 2009.

  • “We would just like to thank you and the staff at the Swettenham Arms for the really splendid 80th birthday celebration we had on Sunday afternoon, 7th February. The banqueting room looked magnificent and the meal was out of this world – our guests all remarked on the quality. Glyn organised the proceedings very well so everything ran very smoothly. Compliments to the chef and the kitchen staff and the ladies waiting on table were just lovely. Thank you Fran for suggesting Roy Peters he was just great with the music during the meal and throughout the afternoon. It was a really memorable day for us and thank you all very much for making it so. We will have to visit you in the summer when the sunflowers and lavenders are out!”

The food was superb and even the pickiest eaters said it was the best food they had ever had at a wedding . I have nothing but praise for Glyn and his team for the seamless management of the wedding breakfast . They helped to make a wonderful day even more special.”

  • We haven’t been for a year but as the weather was super today and it’s a lovely drive we headed out into the country. There was a classic motor bike meeting and some fantastic cars from local people, we both ordered the scampi which is one of the best that we have had .

  • We had a salad and a salmon sandwich with hand cut chips. All very good and a lovely place to be. Great service too.

  • Enjoyed a walk followed by Sunday lunch at the pub. Ordered a small roast which was delicious and a reasonable size portion. A busy pub so be prepared for a short wait.
