Our Ghost

Given the nature of the history of our Inn, it may not be too surprising for customers to hear then that have been a number of ghost sightings in the area, including one at the inn itself!

On 15th November 2005 a customer was enjoying a meal in the dining room. During the meal, a ghostly apparition appeared at the fireplace

The ghost appeared to be the figure of a nun dressed in black. She spoke to the customer and said “My name is Sarah”. She revealed that she was 35 years old and seemed very sad in her demeanour. She was floating on stairs. The customer was quite agitated about the experience and left the pub very quickly, leaving her husband wondering what had happened to cause the upset.

The customer subsequently went to see the local vicar of St. Peters Church (opposite); Chris Kemp who confirmed the ghost had been seen on previous occasions.

Since then, we have been informed that in 1952 the rectory was exorcized by the local vicar to release troubled spirits. In January 2006, The Congleton Paranormal Society conducted a vigil at the pub during the night. The findings of which were published in the local press. More vigils are planned. Paranormal magazine ‘Ghost Voices’ also produced an article on the Swettenham Arms in May 2009.

  • Thoroughly enjoyed our evening meal in this hidden gem. We had the Swettenham Arms recommended to us as we were staying nearby. We hadn’t booked as being a Thursday night we thought it would be fairly quiet, but it was almost full. The friendly manager found us a table and informed us that they still had a half price meal deal on… which greatly surprised us! The dining room was pleasant and cosy, and our drinks and food arrived and we certainly weren’t disappointed. All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. We will definitely return very soon….and hopefully the half price offer will still be on!

  • The local surroundings are lovely and set in Cheshire countryside, greeted at door immediately on entering and shown to our table, drinks order promptly taken, and furnished with menus. Quick but not rushed service we are off to a good start. The only disappointment was my duck was cooked right through and I would much preferred it to be much pinker. This made what otherwise would have been a superb dish only a good one. But still a good one. Desserts were lovely, service fantastic, so very very nearly a five star rating I look forward to returning.
